"Blend, the first EP by Denver based musician Plantigrata is an atmospheric offering that bounces between menacing and comforting, between other-worldly and down-home. With its '80s synth pads, reverse echoes, drones, odd organs, and spinning vacuum hose overtones, the EP is, in short, a trip.
It is chock-full of samples, and these have either been so unconventionally created (At this writing, pasta on djembe is the only one listed), or they are so processed that they are pretty much unrecognizable. At the same time, they feel strangely familiar. Their tinkling and clattering is often in your face, especially if you're listening through headphones at high volume, but they always sit nicely in the mix.
The spooky intro of the first track 'kLARP0017447' morphs into a downtempo float down the river of some faraway planet, and this sets the mood for what's to follow. By the time the guitar, banjo, and humming of the second track, 'Squash Blossom', gets going, the listener should be open to anything.
'Coral Fog Chant' begins with reverb-drenched chords and drones that whoosh, pulse, and ping-pong until stacked vocals and a gentle rhythm join in and nudge the piece along to its conclusion. The fourth track 'Slough' belongs in a movie soundtrack, perhaps in the scene where the protagonist has their moment of clarity.
The album ends with 'Happy Go Lucky' and the music sounds exactly like the title. It's the most conventional track on the EP, using a regular drum kit, snippets of laughing friends, and the silliest of la-la vocals. Portions of this track wouldn't be out of place as the intro to a kids' TV show.
In all, Blend is like a journey to the attic during a storm, at first dark and scary, but then like a reassuring rifling through belongings in a forgotten toy box."
